Introduction
Do you want to develop your laser cutting project? It might be worth taking a look at some of the software you can use to create amazing models at Laser Level Advisor! As a reminder, the most suitable format for laser cutting is the SVG format, so be careful when creating your files. Without further ado, here are our top 8 best laser cutting software.
Software for laser cutting
What is CAD?
CAD stands for Computer Aided Design. So it's about using the computer to create, modify, and analyze designs. Thanks to CAD software, you will be able to create your designs based on geometric shapes, to create your product. Technical 2D drawings and other projects for the aerospace, architecture or automotive sectors can be performed using Computer Aided Design software.
CAD applications are plentiful, but today we're going to focus on using 3D software to create your laser cutting projects.
What is laser cutting?
You may already know that DiyFormat.com is an online 3D printing service. But did you know that we also offer a laser cutting service? You can upload your file to our site and receive your parts within a few days.
Laser cutting is a manufacturing technique transforming a 2D file into a physical object. This technology can be used with different materials, such as acrylic, wood, or cardboard. Laser cutting involves cutting a material very precisely using a laser.
But how do you start a laser cutting project? At first you will have to create your 2D design and for that, you will have to use 2D CAD software. We know that these programs can be very expensive. This is why we decided to make a selection of free 2D software!
Top of the best free 2D CAD software
Adobe Illustrator
We are going to start with software that can be used as well as other software as well as alone. Adobe Illustrator is one of the most versatile tools you can find, allowing you to work with vector graphics.
Therefore, it allows you to easily create SVG files suitable for laser cutting. You will need a little time to learn how to use the different tools it has, but all the artistic opportunities they offer are worth it.
As mentioned above, you can also use Illustrator in addition to other software, to check and repair other files (SVG or other formats).
Overall it is one of the best software to work with for laser cutting. Get a license as soon as you get the chance, and try it for yourself!
Inkscape
The free and open-source alternative to Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape offers you the same possibilities. Whether you want to create a new model or repair an already existing model, all the tools are there to simplify your task.
As with Illustrator, you will need time to use the software to its full potential. Although many features are common to Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator, some have different names and uses. So be careful to avoid confusion when you use both software simultaneously.
Find more information about Inkscape here!
SketchUp
SketchUp is one of the easiest pieces of software to obtain and use, many tools are intuitive, and magnetism helps you heal models without much effort. In addition, thanks to a few plugins, you can access even more features. All this contributes to making SketchUp one of the most interesting software, especially if you have a clear idea of what you want to do, and the necessary plugins.
It's thanks to one of them that you will be able to export SVG files from SketchUp. Do not hesitate to apply what you have learned with other plugins to obtain even more convincing results.
However, be careful, SketchUp does not take into account spheres and circles, and will transform them into polygons. Therefore, avoid using this software to make curved models, but go for anything else!
SolidWorks
Another big name in 3D modeling software, SolidWorks is based on the use of sketches to create models. This is why switching from a 3D model to a 2D model is quite simple using this software, and allows neat and consistent results.
It provides many tools, whether for product modeling or architectural plans. You will need to do some testing before you get to grips with all of the features easily. Once done, you should be able to tackle any project without any real problems.
Please be aware that you cannot export an SVG file from a SolidWorks model. To get a viable file, you must first 'Draw' your object (you can do this through the SW toolbar). Export the drawings in a format similar to IA, and open the Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape files (mentioned above), to convert them to SVG.
AutoCAD
You can't talk about SketchUp and SolidWorks without mentioning AutoCAD. It provides as many tools for the design of architectural plans and mechanical parts as the software mentioned above. So you should find everything you need to create good models, ready to be brought to reality.
This time, you will still need to export your file in DXF format, before going through Illustrator / inkscape to export an SVG file.
OnShape
This software is a viable alternative if you do not have a SolidWorks or AutoCAD license on hand. It provides as many tools as the latter and, like them, takes a little getting used to. You will also need an internet connection to work on it and to download your model. Another interesting point is the fact that OnShape is also available on tablets and smartphones, so that you can work on your models wherever you are!
Once again, you cannot export any SVG files from OnShape models, so you'll need to go through Illustrator / Inkscape to get a file compatible with laser cutting.
You can try OnShape on their website.
SolveSpace
This software seems a bit complex at first glance. This free and open-source solution is not very attractive initially, given that its user interface is quite minimalist. However, when you take the time to familiarize yourself with this software, you realize the large number of features it offers us. In truth, there is almost nothing to envy of SolidWorks or OnShape, whether it be for designing simple shapes or more restrictive and fully functional shapes. In addition, it is free and very quick to download (less than 10 MB).
You can also export your model directly to SVG from SolveSpace.
Solid Edge 2D
Last but not least, here is Solid Edge 2D, developed by Siemens. Still a very versatile software, you can also easily get a free version (you just need to register and answer a survey). All the tools are available to create the first plans of your product, then modify them to make them feasible.
You will need to export your file in DXF format, after selecting the faces you want to export. Again, use Illustrator or Inkscape to finalize the model and make it compatible with laser cutting.
